Diagnostic

Densitometry — Twenty-five million Americans suffer from osteoporosis, resulting in more than one million hip, spine, and wrist fractures annually. Using a bone densitometer, physicians can measure patient bone density and follow it over time. If the patient's bone density is low, or decreases at an abnormally fast rate, the patient may be at risk for osteoporosis.

Mammography — Mammography is a low-dose x-ray of the breast that has proven to be the safest and most effective way of finding breast cancer in its earliest, and most treatable, stages. Mammography can often detect a lump long before it can be felt through physical examination.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Equipment — A stereotactic breast biopsy uses computer-guided imagery to precisely position a biopsy needle within the breast. In this special type of biopsy, the radiologist can sample breast tissues and the patient can avoid undergoing a surgical operation.

Vertebroplasty — A procedure developed by interventional radiologists and performed here at Milford Hospital by Vito Errico, MD, vertebroplasty is used to stabilize broken bones in the spine caused by osteoporosis. Studies have shown that from 75 percent to 90 percent of people treated with vertebroplasty will have complete or significant reduction of their pain.

Pap tests — Milford Hospital, which is one of the few hospital in the state to have board certified pathologist in Cytology on staff, uses the ThinPrep® Pap Test™, (ThinPrep) which detects more cases of cancer in the ealy stages than other Pap tests. ThinPrep is the first real improvement of the Pap smear in 50 years.
